Region Costa Tropical

granada

The Costa Tropical is easily accessible via the A-7 motorway from Malaga (airport) or via the A-44 motorway from Granada (airport). It is 80 km from both sides. The A-7 motorway goes along the coast, making it easy to reach the beaches and cities. The region also has interesting villages in the interior that are worth a visit. These villages are accessible via secondary roads. The popular regions of Alpujarra and Valle Lecrín and the capital city of Granada are also easily accessible via the A-44.

Demographic characteristics

The “Instituto de Estadística y Cartografía de Andalucía” annually determines the number of inhabitants. Here the figures are taken from the municipal registrations. We looked at the country of birth of the people who were registered with a municipality in the Costa Granadino region or the Costa Tropical.

The figures show the following: in 2017 there were 19,186 foreigners living in the Costa Tropical, 15.25% of the total population. Of this, 11,465 people were European, 9,12% of the total population in the Costa Tropical region. The largest groups of foreigners were: Romanians (1,898), Africans (4,163), Moroccans (3,555) and Americans (3,101). The largest groups of Europeans are after the Romanians; English (1,797), Germans (913) and French (774).

The majority of Europeans live in:

  • Motril: 3,289 people representing 5.44% of the population. The largest group are the Romanians with 2,114 people.
  • Almuñécar: 3,947 people corresponding to 14.55% of the population. The largest group is the English with 984 people.
  • Gualchos: 1,224 people corresponding to 24.23% of the population. The largest group are the Romanians with 1,091 people.
  • Salobreña: 1,120 people corresponding to 9.03% of the population. The largest group are the Romanians with 314 people and English with 248 people.

However, if we look at the number of foreigners as a percentage of the total number of inhabitants, names of villages that are more remote will appear; especially villages inland close to the horticultural areas.

Climate of the Costa Tropical

The climate is considered as a local steppe climate. There is little rainfall throughout the year. According to Köppen and Geiger, the climate is classified as BSh. In Motril the average temperature is 18.1 ° C. Approximately 316 mm of precipitation falls annually. The driest month is July, with 2 mm of rain. Most precipitation falls in January, with an average of 46 mm. August is the hottest month of the year. The temperature in August averages 25.9 ° C. January is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 11.4 ° C (Source: Climate-Data.org). The Costa Tropical of Granada is one of the two places in Europe where exotic fruit grows. So do not be surprised when you see mangoes, avocados and custard apples growing on the hills near Almuñecar and Salobreña.

Beaches of the Costa Tropical

One of the most popular destinations of the province of Granada. The sun shines 320 days a year and the climate is subtropical. There are approximately 50 beaches and small inlets spread over 73 kilometers of coastline with crystal clear water and an average temperature of 20 degrees. The most popular seaside resorts with all amenities are Almuñécar, La Herradura, Salobreña and Playa Granada. The Costa Tropical owes its name to the exceptionally good weather throughout the year. Two centuries ago it became the only place in Europe where subtropical fruits such as mango, cherimoya, avocado and papaya could be grown. Fruits that evoke exotic flavors and places, but in fact they are grown in one of the most privileged corners of Andalusia.

On the east side of the Costa Tropical many “quiet” isolated, but excellent beaches are located. “quiet”, because they are less easily accessible and you have to take a walk. Unlike the coastal villages of Malaga, these small urbanizations on the coast have not been developed into tourist centers, because of poor infrastructure and political decisions. This makes this area untouched and gives the tourist an experience in the Spanish way. The villages that offer the best facilities on the east side of the Costa Tropical are Torrenueva, Calahonda, Castell de Ferro and La Rábita. These cities are very popular with the Spanish people. In the summer season it can be very busy in August and also with the Spanish holidays. It is possible that a beach like Torrenueva has 5 lines of parasols with hundreds of people and 3 km away you have a beautiful natural beach “La Goya” that is occupied by only 30 people.

Nature in the region Costa Tropical

The nature park Tejeda, Almijara and Almara is for a small part situated in the region Costa Tropical, which has excellent hiking trails and rivers to practice canyoning. The coast itself has two protected areas. One is the Acantilados de Maro Cerro Gordo Natural Park on the outskirts of the province of Malaga, which we think is the most beautiful (nude) beach of the Costa Tropical. The other natural monument are the rocks of Almuñecar “Peñones de Almunecar“. On the side of Carchuna and La Cucha, close to Motril, are some beautiful beaches where all plants and flowers are protected on the beach. These beaches are formed in some places by rock layers, so the seaweed has given these rocks an impressive green color.

Villages in the region Costa Tropical

In comparison with the Malaga you can say that the coast of Granada is untouched. Of course this is not the case. The coastline of Granada and its villages had an upgrade to tourist standards. The villages on the coast offer all the facilities you need and just a few kilometers inland you experience the silence of history. Below an overview of all villages in the Costa Tropical region.
