Malaga is one of the eight Spanish provinces that are part of the autonomous community of Andalusia. It is situated in the south of the Iberian peninsula, on the Mediterranean between the provinces of Granada in the east and Cadiz in the west. In the north it borders on the provinces of Córdoba and Sevilla. The capital is the city of Málaga.

It has an area of 7,308 km² divided over 103 municipalities and 9 regions. In 2017, the population amounted to more than 1,650,000 inhabitants, making it the second province of Andalusia and the sixth in Spain in terms of population,

The territory has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the series of dolmens of Antequera, the cave paintings of the Cave of Nerja of more than 40 000 years old and the Cave of Pileta Benaoján and Treasure Cave in Rincón de la Victoria.

 

Demographic characteristics


The “Instituto de Estadística y Cartografía de Andalucía” annually determines the number of inhabitants. Here the figures are taken from the municipal registrations. We have looked at the country of birth of the people who were registered in a municipality in the province of Málaga in 2017.

The figures show the following: a total of 295,107 foreigners lived in the province of Málaga in 2017, 18.05% of the population. 146,479 of these were European, 8,96% of the total population in Málaga. The largest groups of foreigners were: Americans (73,832), Africans (56,432), Moroccans (46,712) and English (45,832). The largest groups of Europeans are after the English; Germans (12,491), Romanians (10,972) and French (9,661). At least according to statistics, many Europeans are not registered in the municipality.

 

The majority of Europeans live in:

  • Málaga city, 17,949 people corresponding to 3.15% of the population. The largest group are the French with 2,273 people.
  • Marbella, 17,211 people corresponding to 12.19% of the population. The largest group is the English with 3,084 people.
  • Fuengirola 16,250 people corresponding to 21.69% of the population. The largest group are the English with 4,284 people.
  • Míjas, 16,005 people corresponding to 20.75% of the population. The largest group are the English with 6,790 people.
  • Benalmádena, 12,117 people corresponding to 17.60% of the population. The largest group are the English with 4,663 people.

However, if we look at the number of foreigners as a percentage of the total number of inhabitants, other names of villages that are more remote will also appear; especially villages in the Axarquia where the number of Europeans as a percentage of the total population is between 30% and 40%.

Accesibility Malaga


Málaga can be reached from all corners of Spain by train.

Málaga was connected to the Spanish high-speed network AVE in 2007, with direct connections to Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia.

The road network of Andalusia is good. The big cities are connected to an extensive motorway network and can be reached cheaply by bus.

The port of Málaga annually receives the second largest number of cruise ships in Spain, after Barcelona.

Málaga-Costa del Sol aeropuerto: this airport is located just outside the city of Malaga. . There are a total of 110 destinations, including Belfast, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Cork, Doncaster, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Leeds/Bradfort, Liverpool,  London, Manchester, New Castle, Shannon, Southend Sen. Since July 31, 2014, the metro operates in the city of Málaga with the first two lines.
