The western Costa del Sol is one of the nine provinces of the province of Málaga, in the autonomous community of Andalucía. There are 9 municipalities in this region: Benahavis, Benalmádena, Casares, Estepona, Fuengirola, Manilva, Marbella, Mijas and Torremolinos. The region has a total of 497,266 inhabitants, is 988 km² in size and has a density of 503.3 inhabitants / km².

The Costa del Sol Occidental region borders the area of ​​Malaga-Costa del Sol to the north, which is the most important city on the coast and also forms the division between the tourist-friendly western part and the eastern “quieter” part of the Costa de Axarquía. In the north it also borders the regions Guadalhorce Valley, Sierra de las Nieves and Serrania de Ronda; and in the west, with the Cadiz region of Campo de Gibraltar. In the south lies the Mediterranean Sea. Popular places in this region are: Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella, Mijas, Manilva and Estepona.

The region has a main artery, the motorway Autovía del Mediterráneo (A-7), with parts toll motorway (AP-7) which enters the province near Benalmádena and runs to Guadiaro, a town belonging to the municipality of San Roque (Cádiz) .

An alternative route is the old N-340, or motorway from the Mediterranean, which crosses all the towns on the coast and runs from Cádiz to Barcelona, ​​but which runs through the urban center in many parts.

 

Demographic characteristics

The figures show the following: in 2017 there were 165,159 foreigners living in the Costa del Sol Occidental, 31.22% of the total population. Of these, 87,539 were European, this was 16.55% of the total population in the Costa del Sol Occidental region.

The climate of the Costa del Sol Occidental


The climate in Marbella is warm and temperate and the winter months are much rainier than the summer months. This location is classified as Csa by Köppen and Geiger. The average annual temperature is 17.8 ° C. About 602 mm of precipitation falls annually. The rain falls mainly between the months of November and May. Most precipitation falls here in December, averaging 104 mm. The drought is present from June to September. Summer temperatures range from 20 ° C to 30 ° C and in winter from 5 ° C to 17 ° C. August is the hottest month of the year. The temperature in August is 24.7 ° C on average. January is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 12.2 ° C.
