Thanks to its strategic location, you are close to the Alpujarra, the Sierra Nevada, Granada and the Costa Tropical. The A-44 motorway crosses this region from north to south and connects Granada to the A-7 motorway that runs along the Almerian coast to Malaga. The villages in the region are well connected with well-maintained local roads. The nearest airport is in Granada or Malaga. The Valley is well know for its oranges that grow in a lot of places, due to the smooth climate.

 

Demographic characteristics


The “Instituto de Estadística y Cartografía de Andalucía” annually determines the number of inhabitants. The figures are taken from the municipal registrations. We looked at the country of birth of the people who were registered in a municipality in the Valle Lecrín region in 2017.

The figures show the following: a total of 1,648 foreigners lived in the Valle Lecrín region in 2017, which was 7.34% of the population. Of these 1,069 people were European, this was 4.67% of the total population in the Valle Lecrín region. The largest groups of foreigners were: Germans (279), Americans (276), Africans (250) and French (245). The largest groups of Europeans are after the Germans and French, are the English (216). At least according to statistics, many Europeans are not registered in the municipality.

The majority of Europeans live in:

  • Dúrcal, 367 people corresponding to 5.22% of the population. The largest group are the Germans with 137 people.
  • El Padul, 302 people corresponding to 3.57% of the population. The largest group are the Germans with 96 people and French with 95 people.
  • Lecrín 141 people corresponding to 6.75% of the population. The largest group are the English with 75 people.

Climate of Valle de Lecrín


The climate in Valle Lecrín is classified as warm and temperate. The winter months are much rainier than the summer months. The climate here is classified as Csa by the Köppen-Geiger system. The average annual temperature is 15.3 ° C. The rainfall  averages 430 mm and the least precipitation falls in July. The average in this month is 5 mm. Most precipitation has December, on average 60 mm. The temperatures are highest on average in July, at around 24.8 ° C. Nature in Valle de Lecrín


This region is a favorite for hikers, bird watchers, cyclists and artists. An area of outstanding natural beauty, the Lecrin Valley is famous for its green landscape (because of the meltwater of the Sierra Nevada), the great view of Lake Beznar and the mountains of the Sierra Nevada, for its walks, birds and amazing spring colors. Some villages are located in the Sierra Nevada nature park: El Padul, Nigüelas and Dúrcal. Thanks to its strategic location, you are close to the Alpujarra and the coast. One of the most important wetlands of Andalusia is located in the regions; the Wetlands of Padul, which has a rich flora and fauna. In Niguëlas you will find a naturural monument called “Falla de Niguëlas“. It is also possible to take a natural thermal bath in Dúrcal in plain nature or visit one of the natural caves.
